From 93,000 Transactions to 640 Million a Day

A dated table of UPI milestones: launch, early volumes, limit changes, and the 2025 totals.

UPI was introduced on 11 April 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India. In August 2016, four months after launch, the system carried 93,000 transactions worth ₹3 crore.

By March 2019 the same system carried 80 crore transactions worth ₹1.3 lakh crore — a jump of nearly three orders of magnitude in transaction count in under three years.

Transaction value grew at a 168% compound annual growth rate, from ₹1 lakh crore in FY 2017–18 to ₹139 lakh crore in FY 2022–23. Value grew faster than count, meaning the average transaction got larger as the base widened.

Two limit changes sit on the same timeline: the standard per-transaction ceiling rose from ₹100,000 to ₹200,000 in March 2020, and to ₹500,000 for the Retail Direct Scheme and IPO applications in December 2021. UPI 123PAY was raised from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 on 9 October 2024.

The 2025 figures close the series: over 250 billion transactions worth US$3.4 trillion, about 50% of the world's digital transactions, and more than 640 million transactions a day against 639 million a day for Visa.
